Forgotten Lake

Forgotten Lake

Christy Nyboer’s project “Forgotten Lake” is an art installation inspired by Portland’s strange history of the land where NW Marine Art Works is built. In 1905 Guild’s Lake was the site of Oregon’s Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition, and the area we now know as “NW Industrial”. Prior to 1905, this area was once a natural, swampy wetlands occupied by Native Americans, which eventually became drained and filled to make way for the neighborhood we see today. “Forgotten Lake” is a reflective journey to find creative, physical and emotional places that have been lost over time. Searching for lost feelings of calmness and sanctuary in oneself.

Using aluminum, dirt, seeds and live plants, Christy has recreated her own reflective pool using a historic map of Guild’s Lake as her reference.

“I feel we each have our own Forgotten Lake within ourselves we’d like to reflect on and get back to. The complexity of time and busyness of life leaves us feeling depleted and our lakes drained and filled with dirt.” ~ Christy Nyboer

Sound artist, Ian Epps, has collaborated with Nyboer’s vision of “Forgotten Lake” and composed a sound piece to accompany the viewers experience. He collaged recordings of Portland region Katydids and Cicadas with wind. There are 7 parts to Epps composition and play continuous on loop.

“On the surface, my compositions have many elements of musicality, with harmonic color and multilayered arrangements, but it’s beneath the surface where my interests lie.” ~ Ian Epps

Forgotten Lake is open to the public at Building Five: May 20th - 25th, 2022.

Q&A with Milisuthando Bongela on April 6 and 7

In her poetic and galvanizing essay film, Johannesburg-based artist, writer, and
first-time filmmaker Milisuthando Bongela has constructed a multilayered and thought
provoking inquiry into history and identity that through five distinct chapters evokes
the experience and after-effects of growing up amidst apartheid. Born in 1985, Bongela
lived her first, inchoately remembered years with her family in the Transkei, a segregated
zone in southeastern South Africa established in the 1970s under a false sense of
cultural and geographical independence for Black people. A part of the country’s Xhosa
community, the filmmaker delves into personal memories, gradual historical change, the
legacies of racism on both Black and white citizens, and her continued search for belonging
and identity. Milisuthando is a reminder that none of us exist outside of history.

Milisuthando |
2023 Sundance Film Festival
This penetrating coming-of-age personal essay on love and what it means
to become human in the context of race explores the memories and experiences
of Milisuthando Bongela, who grew up within apartheid without knowing it was
happening until it was over.

Bongela was born to a loving middle-class Xhosa community in the Transkei —
an unrecognized state that was formulated out of the separate development
dream of the apartheid regime in South Africa. The Transkei was designed to
raise some denizens on a diet of suggestions that they did not experience the ills
of apartheid, and though it was dissolved after the fall of apartheid, it left behind
bewildered memories in those who built their lives inside the regime’s sordid
social experiment.

Milisuthando elucidates that apartheid was something that was done to all of us.
Bongela invites the audience in as she plumbs the anatomy of race as bequeathed
to us by our ancestors and explores what roles our ancestors play in how we create
our personhood.

I contributed music to this beautifully poetic film.

BREAKOUT SESSION #2: STRIKING AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
BREAKOUT SESSION #3: WORKING WITH CHILDREN
* recordings accessible from website link.

As the COVID-19 pandemic worsens, cultural workers are experiencing mass layoffs, and it is clear the art world will never look the same. In the first hour of this emergency forum, speakers will present ten-minute reports from the field; the second hour will feature breakout Q&A sessions with the speakers as well as a labor lawyer and a children’s therapist.

Art • Work • Place was originally planned as a two-day summit on efforts to create a just and equitable workplace in the art world—union organizing at museums, protests against toxic philanthropy, challenges to institutional racism, and lawsuits against sexual harassment and gender discrimination. But the current health emergency has drastically changed our conversations and needs. This online forum will instead focus on the immediate moment, sharing concrete information and ideas: What is happening to workers at art institutions across the country? What coalition groups have been formed for solidarity and support? What are our strategies going forward?

The organizers are reallocating the budget for the planned summit and speakers are forgoing their usual honorarium so that funding can be directed to aid groups and individuals in need.

Speakers include:

Ian Epps (Art Handlers Alliance) will explain what is occurring at the city, state, and federal levels to support precarious workers, and what actions we can take.

Michelle Millar Fisher (Art + Museum Transparency) will describe the layoffs, furloughs, and pay cuts taking place at museums and galleries, and the consequences for unionization.

Camilo Godoy (artist/educator) will outline the specific challenges confronting freelance museum educators.

Landry Haarmann (Met Council on Housing) will discuss strategies for rent strikes.

Shaun Leonardo (artist) will talk about his work with young people caught up in the justice system and New York State’s recent rollback of bail reform.

Andres Puerta (International Union of Operating Engineers Local 30) will address cross-organizing and solidarity with striking workers.

Kate Zayko, LCSW, will answer questions about the new struggles parents and children are now facing.

The forum will be chaired by Nikki Columbus.

Organized by the PhD Program in Art History (CUNY Graduate Center), in collaboration with the James Gallery/Center for the Humanities (CUNY Graduate Center) and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics (The New School), where it is sponsored in part by the Helen Shapiro Lectureship.

New York, New York 10013

Opening reception: Wednesday, January 31, 6-9 pm
Opening night performances from Mathew Burtner 7 & 8 pm.
With Ian Epps, Aaron Halley, Tom Mulligan, and Jeremy Slater.

Gigantic ArtSpace [GAS] and free103point9 are pleased to present [silence], a exhibition focused on artists' uses of and responses to silence - as manifested in sculpture, in installation, in composition, in works on paper, and in time-based practices. The works on view address the futility of the chase, the beauty of absence, and the rich potential of an empty signal. Works from: Matthew Burtner, Jeroen Diepenmaat, Michael Graeve & Christoph Dahlhausen, Pablo Helguera, Douglas Henderson, Pierre Huyghe, Tarikh Korula & Tianna Kennedy, David La Spina, LoVid, Juan Matos Capote, Lee Ranaldo, Douglas Repetto, Michelle Rosenberg, Stephen Vitiello, and James Woodfill. Curated by Dylan J. Gauthier and Galen Joseph-Hunter.
Sound program: A Call for Silence, curated by Nicolas Collins.
Courtesy Sonic Arts Network.
Saturday performance series: 4:33 pm featuring Michelle Nagai (2/10), Michael Graeve with Tianna Kennedy (2/17), and 31 Down (2/24).

ABOUT THE WORKS

By compounding the energy of the FM signal, Matthew Burtner's performance Study 1.0 (feedback) for radio transceiver revisits the artist's childhood in Alaska and his ensuing focus on open communication in unoccupied places. David La Spina will present photographs of Burtner's performance at the opening reception - a sort of residual, feedback hum of the opening night.

Juan Matos Capote combines painting, sculpture, and field recordings in Series H, a study of accumulation, absence, and the nature of that which is imagined but unpronounced.

In Jeroen Diepenmaat's pour des dents d'un blanc éclatant ! et saines. dead birds are reunited with their lost birdsong through the preservational power of phonography.

Michael Graeve and Christoph Dahlhausen create an inaudible, synaesthetic feedback loop between two divergent but thematically similar art practices with their minimalist cadavre-exquise, Dialog 1.2.

Pablo Helguera presents new work gleaned from the series Dead Languages Conservatory, last words from all-but-lost languages.

Douglas Henderson exhibits a series of sculptures involving ultra low-level sound components, water, and the visual language of sine-waves.

Pierre Huyghe's Partition de silence (Score of silence) is a transcription of Cage's silent masterwork 4'33î (1952) into a flute sonata achieved via a sound-to-MIDI converter program.

Tarikh Korula and Tianna Kennedy will create a recording stylus in an attempt to unlock the Archeoacoustic sound dormantly sealed in found and historic objects around New York City.

Hearing Red continues the collaborative LoVid's work in blurring sensory boundaries through the use of electrical signals and synaesthetic output: in this case, a pure "Red" video signal is played as "sound" through a speaker, taking its form from the frequency of the video signal.

Lee Ranaldo's 4 organs combines thematic and visual data from Robert Smithson and Steve Reich to reach a third, distended point between the suspension of their respective oeuvres.

Douglas Repetto will realize a new version of the installation, puff bang reverb, a kinetic sculpture and semi-accurate, two-dimensional hyper-zoom, which exposes the secret life of displaced air molecules.

Michelle Rosenberg will present a new series of Ornamental Headphones that reassess our collective, compulsive culture of listening.

Stephen Vitiello's Trio, employs low-frequency sine tones to force the surface of a number of speakers to pulse and vibrate in patterns visible to the eye yet inaudible to human ears.

James Woodfill's film 60hz derives its subject from the constant and pervasive flow of electricity throughout our environment to alter our perceptions of time and movement.
Marumari, Richard Devine, High_Five_Bros., Ian Epps
Rhode Island's Marumari is a computer animator by day, and you can feel it in his gentle, wispy songs. His Supermogadon rains radiance, rays of new wave and new age synths showering the thin basslines and clicking freshly cut underbrush in a warm glow. It's the Moody Blues meets Mouse on Mars. It's bubbly. It's refreshing. It's pop, plain and simple. Local Warp and Schematic Records experimental electronic artist Richard Devine presents a live triple laptop threat, previewing tracks from his upcoming singles and 3-D electro-acoustic album. The High_Five_Bros. play droning improvisational space rock. Ian Epps performs on the glitch-hop, Oval-esque tip. And DJs Rasheed, Nemo and J-Stroke drop platters between the clatter. A premiere night of rare, top-shelf electronic music. MJQ Concourse (Ware)

At the Edge of the Meander: Nightingales

The following recording was excerpted from a two week, 24 hour seamless recording project
documenting the mating habits of Nightingales.
10 years ago this week.

Location: Petite Camargue Alsacienne sanctuary in Saint Louis, France.

At the edge of a field of stinging nettles lie a creek bed, and on the other side, a tree. I placed a series
of concealed microphones just above a favored branch where a young male Nightingale perched to sing
morning and night. I was fortunate to have found such a great placement for the microphones, because
these recordings have unbelievable clarity.

Male nightingales have a remarkable set of varied song; nearly 200 different song types with repeated
and unrepeated elements. Their unique songs are what set them apart in partner selection. During
mating season they'll sing all night and day, with just a 2 hour break in the afternoon. Once they find a
mate, they stop singing at night.

As noise pollution has risen throughout society, the British nightingale population has decreased by 91%
over the last 50 years. One of the fastest declines of any other species. They remain on the endangered
species list in the UK.

Being given permission to travel inside the sanctuary was truly a beautiful experience. To enter a space
free of people, inhabited by hundreds of wild boar, swans, cuckoos and nightingales on their long
migratory travel from the Iberian Peninsula and the far reaches of West Africa - was to listen to a fuller
expression of liberation.

I owe gratitude to the assistance of the joint research teams from the University of Strasbourg and the
University of Basel, Department of Environmental Sciences.

camargue.unibas.ch/en/research/

Portions of this two week recording project were included in Vera Lutter's "One Day", 2011, a two screen
installation exhibited at Gagosian Gallery and Carré d'Art – Musée d'art Contemporain, Nîmes, France.

Ⱅ Ⰲ
This recording has also been included in the
NTS Radio Infinite Mixtapes series. Launched June 1, 2021
"The4yearoldchild is a continuing series of audio-portraits, documenting a world
through child's eyes.
Ian Epps finds the4yearoldchild Courtside, entertains the idea of an identity
of a child, constructed out of sound. Understanding that humans are complex
filtering machines, Courtside is the4yearoldchild's experience of playing a game
of lawn tennis. Developing a vocabulary of this activity, the child relies on memory,
and an understanding of physics, weather conditions and human behavior".

. . . .

"Brooklyn-based Brit Ian Epps is a multimedia artist whose “audio portrait” is meant to interpret the way a child may filter everyday interaction. Through his sound work on “Find the4yearoldchild Courtside Volume 1″ pixel-sized sounds are organically synthesized into this fully digitized sound experiment. Epps captures the echo of hollowness on the unusually off-center “mailingclipping” that’s more like a toy player piano caught while sinking under water with its innards hitting craggy rocks and other debris as it drops in slow motion. Each of the twelve tracks here has its own unique mark, some sparse, some a bit more playful and yet distant. “ifnoon” certainly qualifies as the latter, with muffled monitors and other gauge-sounding apparatus it’s what one may imagine as a joy ride on a submarine through the depths of an Icelandic lava flow. As hauntingly scenic as some of Scanner’s best work, Epps’ “symptomsofarquarterback” incorporates a similar attention to the textural effects and hyperbolic sensitivity of the final mix. Please welcome Softl Music to the table, bringing with them the ability to recognize the important impact of the influx of sound art that falls beyond traditional borders that define artistic paradigms". - TJ Norris, Igloo Magazine

track Creamy Burst as the only sound source. Creamy Burst was composed in 1994 and
was originally released on the portuguese rock compilation "100%".

Bio

Artist Statement

As a Sonic/Visual Artist and extended guitar musician, my work focuses on psycho-acoustics, audio phenomena and the intimacy of the listener's experience. My process is entirely improvisatory in nature and requires me to record in real time.

Using a 12-string acoustic guitar and a range of processing techniques, such as negative frequency responses, formant synthesis and multi-channel surround sound, I construct feedback systems that resonate the guitar’s strings, ringing out sympathetic tones. On the surface, my compositions have many elements of musicality, with harmonic color and multilayered arrangements, but it’s beneath the surface where my interests lie.

My fascination is with the boundaries of perception, the permeability of the body and the space between what exists and what is felt. It’s here where I start to build and shape the unseen and unheard, magnifying these concealed murmurations and indeterminable intrusions that exist below the scope of our hearing, but have real resonant affect upon the body.

So as to invite a physical and emotive experience of sound as swarms, swells and cavitating shifts that perforate the acoustic field and engulf the listener. I try to produce aural equivalents to seismic violence, akin to the calving of an ice shelf or the unnatural silence before a storm.

My work has been exhibited in museums and institutions internationally by way of temporal event or installation at venues such as the Walker Art Center, MoMA PS1, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, Lovebytes Biennial (Sheffield, UK), Garage Projects (Atlanta, GA), A.I.R. Gallery (NY, NY), EYEDRUM (Atlanta, GA), free103point9 Wavefarm, SIGGRAPH (Los Angeles, CA) and Queens Museum (Queens, NY).
